Dr. Shubo Zhang (张舒博)

I am a scientist studying mechanics and physics of geological, biological and engineering systems. I am currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Trento, Italy. I’m particularly interested in dynamic mechanical behaviors, such as crack propagation, seismic wave and rate/time-dependent material properties, which can benefit humanity through applications such as the prevention of natural disasters and the treatment of diseases. I am also interested in other topics of engineering science, including fracture, fatigue, contact, adhesion, friction, as well as cell mechanics.

I earned my Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 2025, where I was supervised by Prof. Huajian Gao. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics as well as dual major in Chemistry at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2020.

In addition to science, I enjoy natural photography, especially observing birds from wetlands and forest to mountains and sea. So far, I have traveled across Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America, recording more than 800 species worldwide.

Natural observation not only brings me happiness, but also offers new perspectives from which to learn about the natural world. Why do woodpeckers avoid concussions? Why does the flight of owls produce no sound? How can a falcon dive at speeds approaching one-third of the speed of sound? The nature still holds many mysterious yet fascinating questions awaiting answers.
